Embalse de Soria, far out the biggest reservoir of the island with a capacity of 40.288.625 cubic meter (m³) of water. Very deep and long with steep shores. The huge dam is built in 1971 and gives a great show of waterfalls when the lake is full after heavy rain (on the photo almost dry). Gran Canaria, mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records for the Island with the most lakes. A fact that just a few people know. All together 63 lakes with the function of a reservoir, in Spanish called "Embalse" or Presa", with a capacity of more then 83 million cubic meter. Some of them are used for the production of drinking water and are protected area, like presa "Salto de Perro", not far from Mogán.

Most of the smaller lakes in the South are completely dried out at the end of the summer season and will fill up again in autumn and the beginning of the winter period. In just a very short time the water level rise at some lakes more then 80 meters and will fill up the reservoir with 40.288.625 m³ water, like at the Embalse de Soria which is the biggest reservoir of Gran Canaria. The three biggest reservoirs Embalse de Soria, Embalse de Chira and Embalse de Cueva de las Niñas are the whole year through filled with water.
